NHS 10 year plan: "We must not paste AI solutions over brittle IT infrastructure"

As we await publication of the NHS' long-awaited 10-Year Health Plan, Dosium's CEO and Co-Founder Nicholas Appelbaum delivers a stark warning in HSJ: without legislating for clinical interoperability, the NHS risks missing the point again.

While AI dominates the conversation and captures political attention, the data infrastructure needed to support it remains brittle and disconnected. Nicholas argues that we’ve normalised a system in which digital disconnection is the default - and patient safety suffers as a result. Drawing on the US example, he urges UK policymakers to follow suit by making interoperability a legal obligation, with enforceable expectations on open standards, API capabilities, and accountability. Otherwise, strategy alone will not support clinicians or reduce harm.
